Sarah Helen Killgore Scholarship

Dr. Sarah Helen Killgore was a graduate of Piedmont Hospital School of Nursing and went on to obtain a baccalaureate degree in nursing from The University of Georgia, a master’s degree in nursing from Emory University and a doctor of philosophy degree in higher education from Georgia State University.

Her nursing career spanned 45+ years and during her career she worked as a staff nurse, private duty nurse, head nurse, nursing instructor, educational consultant and as an assistant director and director of a nursing school. From September 1965 until it’s closure in June 1983, she was director of the Piedmont Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta. Through her vision and leadership, the Piedmont School of Nursing became recognized as one of the leading diploma schools of nursing in the state and nation.

She gives unselfishly of her time and talents to nursing and nursing education, and educational, professional and community groups. She is active in her church, Georgia League for Nursing, National League for Nursing, Georgia Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing, Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education and the Atlanta Women’s Club. She has served all of these organizations either as an officer, committee chair, a committee member or as a program planner. She is the recipient of several awards and citations. These include the GLN Mabel Korsell Award, NLN Southern Regional Award, GNA Special Recognition Award and Sigma Theta Tau, Epsilon Alpha Chapter, Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Killgore is dedicated to high ideals in nursing education and practice. She is an encourager to students, faculty and others and challenges them to do their best at all times. She is respected by her peers and superiors for her thoroughness in her work.

The Sarah Helen Killgore Scholarship was established by the GLN Board in 1991 to honor contributions made to nursing and nursing education by Sarah Helen. It was awarded for the first time in 1993. This scholarship acknowledges future nurses who are committed to excellence in nursing.
